Why 'No Trade' Is a Valid Signal (and Often the Best One)

By the Signal Bench team · 4 min read · Updated 2026-08-01

Most traders lose money not on bad trades, but on too many trades. A signal service that always has a BUY or SELL ready is optimising for engagement, not for your account.

The market isn't always tradeable

Trend-following logic — which most signals rely on — only works when there's a trend. In a choppy, sideways market it whipsaws: buy the top of the range, sell the bottom, bleed fees. The honest output in those conditions is NO TRADE.

How Signal Bench decides to wait

The engine runs an ADX regime filter and a market-regime classifier. If the market is ranging or too volatile, or if the indicators don't reach real confluence, it holds in NO TRADE rather than manufacture a weak signal. Fewer, higher-quality setups beat a constant stream of marginal ones.

Waiting is a skill

The best traders are patient. NO TRADE isn't the engine failing to find something — it's the engine protecting you from a setup that isn't there.
