Open Interest Explained: Reading Conviction Behind a Move
By the Signal Bench team · 4 min read · Updated 2026-08-01
Open interest (OI) is the total number of futures contracts currently open. Unlike volume, which counts every trade, OI counts positions that are still live. It's a direct read on how much money is committed to the market.
Reading OI with price
- Price up + OI up = new longs, conviction behind the move
- Price up + OI down = shorts covering, move may be running out of fuel
- Price down + OI up = new shorts, conviction behind the drop
- Price down + OI down = longs closing, capitulation or exhaustion
Why it matters
A breakout backed by rising OI has fresh money behind it and is more likely to hold. A move on falling OI is often just positions unwinding, and fades. Pair OI with funding and volume for a fuller picture of conviction.
